Description
The
Shenandoah Valley Railroad
(SVR) was completed in1882, extending down the Shenandoah Valley from Hagerstown, Maryland through West Virginia and into Virginia, ending at Roanoke where it connected with the
Norfolk & Western Railroad
(N&W) The development of this railroad had considerable backing from the
Pennsylvania Railroad
. In 1890 it went into bankruptcy and was reorganized as the
Shenandoah Valley Railway,
becoming a part of N&W later that year. Today the tracks are a major artery of the
Norfolk Southern Railway
.
Items from the SVR are seldom found, but I offer for auction a
freight receipt dated November 3, 1890.
. It was
for a shipment brick from Basic Station
. The total
freight charge was .95
. The back side is blank.
The receipt measures appx 9x5 inches and is printed on medium-weight paperstock. It is in
fair condition
, even considering it is
over 125 years old
. There is a small tear gap on the top center, and the edges are worn. It has a small hole in the upper left from when the railroad filed it on a needle-type file. All writing/markings are from its issuance and processing. The back is blank.
A great item for the SVR or N&W railfan.
