, of a 20 foot high shorebreak wave at Waimea Bay, Haleiwa, North Shore Oahu, Hawaii.
This is a very popular photo with people who like black and white. It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. Please note that the photo may appear darker on this page depending on your individual monitor brightness and contrast settings. Waimea Bay has one the largest surf breaks in the world. It is also home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing contest only held when the waves are at least 40 feet high. This is a popular photo at retail locations in Hawaii.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes surfing or ocean images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Waimea shorebreak waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. This 20 foot high wave is breaking in water only about four feet deep. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.

Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
The prints are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print, and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from an original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed. **When it is attached to the single mat black 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the black backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a wider margin at the top and bottom edges of the photo which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is. We also can print larger sizes of this photo, please inquire.
