, and of the finals of the 2003 Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Contest at Waimea Bay, Haleiwa, North Shore Oahu, Hawaii. It is initialed (BR) and dated on the front of the photo, and is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage.
It has preservation tips included in the label on the back, and has been published in several magazines. It was also featured in our twice award winning photo history book: "Haleiwa: A Pictorial History" available at our e-Bay store." Waimea Bay has one the largest surf breaks in the world.
This is one of our more popular images here in Hawaii at point of purchase locations and galleries, and has been featured in the new top rated CBS 'Hawaii 50' TV series as back ground art.
It would make a great gift for someone who likes this area or historic surfing images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Waimea bay is home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing Contest, and some of the largest rideable waves in the world. Aikau, who was known as a big wave rider, also liked to surf small to medium size waves at this break, Haleiwa, Sunset, and Chun's Reef. He was born on Maui in 1946 and was Hawaii's most famous big wave surfer, and a lifeguard at Waimea Bay for many years. He was lost at sea during a ocean disaster on the Hokule'a ancient sailing canoe replica in 1978. During an extremely hazardous storm, the double hulled canoe capsized and Aikau left on a surfboard in an attempt to paddle for help, he was never seen again. He will always be remembered as a true Hawaiian surfing legend and a surfing friend of the photographer. Ironically it was the late big wave surfer Mark Foo who is credited with creating the saying "Eddie Would Go" which actually refereed to the fact that Eddie would go for it on the biggest, gnarliest waves, that other surfers refused, often taking off on the other side of the bowl at Waimea on giant days! Eddie was the 'King of Waimea' a true Hawaiian surfing legend! This photo was published in several surfing magazines worldwide.
This is home of some of the largest rideable waves in the world. The contest has only been held just nine times since it was created in 1984 (from December 1 to February 28). It can run only when wave heights reach at least 40 feet at the bay. Waimea waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. This 30 foot high wave is breaking in water only about 15 feet deep. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
Our original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Magnum P.I.""Hawaii 5-0", Also NETFLIX "Finding Ohana", and more

PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from the original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed.
**When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print which you can see here. It makes the print look like there is a margin at the edges of the photo, and is not a mat board cutout.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
