    Description

During World War I, returning wounded soldiers could get care at one of several major War Hospitals in the U.S.  One of the main ones was in Dayton, Ohio.
The Home was originally built directly after the Civil War to care for wounded veterans.  In WW I, many returning vets needed long term care after being exposed to mustard gas and other toxic chemicals.
These three booklets were more like magazines and part of the War Hospitals Library in Dayton, which was managed by the National League for Woman’s Service, a civilian volunteer group started in 1917.
The booklets are all a bit different with content. They average approximately 50 pages long.
The yellow-bound one has many pen and ink sketches of stately buildings in the U.S.  There are short articles and poems of different regions of the country .  The bright red-bound one has three longer short stories (one by Booth Tarkington) and a poem.  While the maroon-bound one has many short pieces, some of them humorous.
Each month, the Library would feature articles from one of the nation’s popular magazines such as Harper’s, The Red Book, or Century Magazine.
These “magazines” are in good shape for being over 100 years old.  The covers resemble the color and material of grocery shopping bags.  All of the original binding remains.
