Description
This is a quality original hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph custom printed by longtime Hawaii professional surfing photographer Bill Romerhaus in a darkroom from the original negative, archivally developed in chemistry and printed on Ilford 'Pearl' semi-matte surface black & white photographic paper from a 35mm negative andmounted on a single black 8x10 inch backing board **which is included as part of the print (see photo),
with caption, surfing history, and photography information on the back, of the late Hawaii pro surfer Mark Foo riding a 40 foot wave at Waimea Bay, Haleiwa, north Oahu Hawaii. This was shot on T-MAX 400 black and white film so it looks a little grainier and not as sharp as a digital print, but is still a nice historic photo.
The Bay is home of the Eddie Aikau Memorial Big Wave Surfing Contest, and some of the largest rideable waves in the world. It is initialed and dated on the front of the photo, is shrink wrapped to protect it from damage and has preservation tips included in the label on the back. This photo was published in several surfing magazines. Foo was known as one of the suggested big wave riders in the world and a personal friend of the photographer. Unfortunately the surfing world lost him when he drowned in 1994 surfing giant waves at 'Mavericks' in California. He was a Hawaii big wave surfing legend and this photo may help perpetuate his place in surfing history. Foo was also credited with the saying "Eddie Would Go." The photographer was a friend of Mark's and provided surf photos for Foo's surf column in the North Shore News for nearly 10 years.
Waimea Bay, has one the largest surf breaks in the world. It waves are some of the most powerful on earth, generated by far distant North Pacific Ocean storms during the winter months (Sept-March). They are an incredible example of the ocean's mightiness. It has been said that one wave this size if harnessed for energy could provide enough electrical power to light a thousand homes for over an hour. Native Hawaiians, surfers, and a lot of oriental people consider these magnificent waves to be a supreme example of power and manifested with the spirit of mother nature. To actually see these waves breaking along the shoreline is an awesome, humbling, and unforgettable experience.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii.
We're proud to mention that many of our photos were used as background artwork in the new CBS television network series "Hawaii 5-0".
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. It is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper. The photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from the original negative and margins may be slightly trimmed.
**When it is attached to the single mat 8x10 inch backing board you will be able to see the the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the edges of the photo as you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
