    ABOUT THE ITEM:
This ice house coupon booklet is from the Columbia Ice & Cold Storage Company and is in very good condition.  Originally, the booklet was purchased from the Columbia Ice & Cold Storage Company at their "current market price."  As ice was delivered (in the future) the homeowner (or business owner, such as grocers) would tear out the appropriate coupons to "pay" for the bags of ice that were delivered.  Ice booklet coupons during this period were typically in denominations of 25, 50, 75 and 100 pounds; however, these were simply marketed as “large bags.”
    WHAT'S AN ICE HOUSE?:
This During the wintertime, ice house employees would go to the local lake, "harvest" massive blocks of ice, transport the blocks to the local ice house, pack them closely together, and insulate them (against melting) with sawdust.  Ice companies in larger (or distant) cities would purchase ice from the bigger ice companies who would then ship the ice in rail cars.  As commercial refrigeration become available in the late 1930's, the larger ice houses were able to manufacture their own ice "in house" continuously.   Ice houses typically also delivered heating oil, fuel oil and kerosene.
Prior to the availability of household refrigeration, perishable food was kept in an "ice box."  Ice was delivered to homes every week by horse drawn wagon (or later on, by truck). The homeowner would hang an "ice sign" in their front window so that the wagon driver would know whether the owner wanted 25, 50, 75 or 100 pounds of ice (before the driver even stopped his wagon).
ABOUT THE COLUMBIA ICE & COLD STORAGE COMPANY:
During our years of researching and selling ice house coupon booklets, one of the things we learned is that as “electrical refrigeration” proliferated in homes, businesses and rail cars - - ice companies either closed, merged or shifted their focus to fuel (oil, coal, etc.).  Inasmuch, it appears the Columbia Ice & Cold Storage Company's life was short-lived.
During our research, from Page 275 of R. E. Hackman's 1911-1912 Columbia City Directory, we learned that Hetzler Brothers Ice & Cold Storage was located at 308-324 Broadway.  Possibly this was the original “ice house” located at this address.
The Missouri Secretary of State reports that the Columbia Ice and Cold Storage Company was a for-profit business which registered with the Missouri Secretary of State's Office on December 10, 1964.  The company forfeited their registration after the State of Missouri undertook judicial actions after the company failed to file their annual report on January 1, 1982 (18-years later).
(Please note:  During our research we came across a number of other "Columbia Ice & Cold Storage" companies in other states: Columbia, Tennessee; Seattle, Washington; Livingston, New York; et al).
