IDF/ZAHAL Jerusalem March medal - 1972 (Important year!)
The Jerusalem March is a traditional procession that takes place in Jerusalem every year on the holiday of Sukkot. Thousands of people from Israel and around the world march through the city streets.
In its early years, the march was organized by the IDF and became known as the "Four-Day March" and later changed to "Three-Day March"
In 1972, heavy rains hit the march led to the dispersal after it began. After following this damage and budgetary burden, discussions led to decision to move the march to autumn.
No march was held in May 1973, and following a government decision, the 1973 march was moved to September.
In 1974 the march was reduced for budgetary reasons to one day only....
Beginning in 2003, thousands of Christian marchers began joining the parade each year at the International Christian Embassy in Jerusalem.
Despite opposition for the two marches, Jewish and Christian together, the joint march continued to march in the following years.
Today it is sometimes also referred to as the "Traditional International Jerusalem March"
