Jean Charlot (French/Mexican/American, 1898-1979)
Born in Paris 1898, Jean Charlot, was descended from parents he later described as "sundry exotic ancestors" - his father, a French businessman reared in Russia, and his mother, with her French, Mexican and Jewish lineage - Charlot was drawn to the Mexican part of his heritage. He later became a naturalized American painter and illustrator active in Mexico and the United States, particularly in Hawai'i. After studying at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris and serving as an artillery officer at the end of WWI, he ventured to Mexico City in the early 1920's. He befriended important figures in the Mexican Mural Movement, such as Diego Rivera.  In 1928, works by Charlot were included with those of 21 other artists (including Rivera, Orozco, O'Higgins, Siqueiros, and Carlos Mérida) in an exhibition at the Art Center Gallery in New York organized by Frances Flynn Paine, the manager of a Rockefeller fund to sponsor Mexican artists. The exhibition had the co-sponsorship of the Mexican Ministry of Education and the Mexican National University. He later became a naturalized American, and begin teaching in Colorado and then proceeded to Hawai'i in 1949 to teach at the University of Hawai'i, where he remained for the next thirty years. His art is animated and colorful, yet simplistic and original. Major private collections of his works are found at the University of Hawai'i library, the Honolulu Museum of Art, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and the Hawai'i State Art Museum. Exclusive galleries usually have access to his works on paper. Jean Charlot devoted himself to themes of family and the working class, revealing the universality of human nature. He was known as the "Champion of the Everyday" showing people doing things which were important to them - the simple, everyday activities that make up living. Charlot felt that "art is to thought what man's voice is to man - a fast and faithful means of communication". He created art for the people - art that instructed, edified and amused. He is best known for his extraordinary sense of color and for the sublime simplicity of his compositions.
