    Description

Large Heavy 1904 Silver-Plate Platter - Berndorf Metalware Factory (Navy?). Condition is Used.  This large and heavy silver-plate platter (25 inches wide, 11 inches tall, and 1 1/4 inches depth) appears to have been made for the Austria-Hungarian Navy, dated 1904.  It was made by the famous Berndorf Metalware Factory (BMF) whose hallmark stamp is on the backside showing BMF's trademark bear, next to the date stamp of 1904.  I'm assuming it was made for the Navy since it has a crowned anchor stamp on the front top of the platter.
Being an antique, this platter does have minor scratch marks and does require periodic polishing, but for its age it is in excellent condition.
The Berndorf Metalware Factory (BMF) was founded in 1843 in the small village of Berndorf in the region Lower Austria of the Austria-Hungarian Empire.  The Foundry location is connected with its marking system.  Due to the assonance between the words Berndorf and Barendorf (in German Barendorf means "bear village") many of the BMF marks contain a bear profile, with the words A.Krupp (owner of BMF from 1891 to 1938) and Berndorf surrounding the bear.
As an interesting note, during World War I the Austria-Hungarian Navy fought on the German side, in the Mediterranean theater, and this Navy included a submarine force.  Captain Georg von Trapp of "The Sound of Music" family, commanded a submarine during this war, distinguishing himself and becoming Baron von Trapp.  However, he refused Hitler's "offer" to assume a command in the German Navy, requiring the von Trapp family to escape Austria during World War II.
