The boards of this book are semi-rigid, covered with a permanent type of jacket that folds over the edges and is secured to the inner board surfaces.  There is some age toning with slight rubbing to the edges and at the corners, but all surfaces are clean and straight. The book has been fitted with a

Presented is Ms. Tennent’s story of her life including many early photos of her parents and other family members. A large album of her work is displayed  (in black & white of course), beginning with some of the early pieces from her student days, progressing to the style of many of the recognizable pieces that brought her international acclaim.  She limits her story not only to herself, but also offers a considerable education on art in general, the different styles, techniques as well as many artists themselves.
Born in 1889 in Dulwich, England, reared in both England and South Africa and schooled in Paris, Madge Tennent married and lived in New Zealand for a period and Samoa, before settling in Hawaii during the early 30s.   Ms. Tennent’s true personal talent immerged in her style of addressing individuals of Polynesian ethnic appearance.  She had an affinity for displaying large, opulent Hawaiian woman utilizing a number of different mediums such as watercolors, charcoal, pen and ink, pastels and oils.  Initially her images aroused considerable controversy, however, insight and appreciation reined and today Madge Tennent is one of Hawaii’s most widely revered artists.  Her piece’s can be seen in banks, financial institutions and public facilities throughout the islands, not to mention private collections worldwide.   This early autobiography was issued in a limited quantity and it is rare to see such a lovely copy of this large format book, appearing nearly untouched for the past 70 years.  MADGE TENNENT AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF AN UNARRIVED ARTIST would make an excellent addition to either a Pacific Island or Art library.
