This magazine measures a standard-sized 21.4 by 27.8 cm and contains 40 pages ... all in B&W save for page 11 and the outer covers. The front cover depicts Mass Central's 44 ton Whitcomb crossing Church Street in Thorndike on 26 January 1980 in a photo by Editor and Publisher Donald B. Valentine, Jr. Thorndike is a village in Palmer, Massachusetts, the "town of seven railroads." DBV promotes safety in RUNNING EXTRA. New England Rail News contains 7 photos of rail vehicles that are now mostly merely history. THE REBIRTH OF THE MASSACHUSETTS CENTRAL by D.B. Valentine covers this new little operation of the south end of the former New York Central's Ware River Branch, and bits of the old B&M's Massachusetts Central main line. This article contains a good map of area railroads and 16 photos, including 2 in color. Still running in 2014 and doing well as far as I know in a tough environment. NEW ENGLAND ARTICULATEDS by Harry A. Frye saturates 8 pages with the story of B&A 2-6-6-2's Mallets, B&M monsters of the same arrangement built for Hoosac Tunnel service, and then sold for a long happy life on the MEC's Mountain Subdivision, and the rare B&M 0-8-8-0's. Included, along with the 14 photographs, is a 2-page roster of all the beasties with their ultimate dispositions. NEW ENGLAND'S FAMED ... WHITE TRAIN! by Gregg M. Turner revisits this well-covered and most deserving subject over 10 pages replete with 12 photos and reproductions of a map, a PTT, and a wine list. This New York & New England Railroad luxury train began service between Boston and New York City in 1891 and is arguably the most famous of all passenger trains in New England railway history. All aboard for a great historical ride. The Back Shop concerns models of the NYNH&H I-5 and the B&M K-8 and A-41f, among others. There are 11 photos, both prototype and models, spread out over 8 pages. The rear cover features the front cover loco on the now-gone shaky Bondsville trestle and the newly rebuilt and still very shiny BAR BL-2 No.54. No.54 is still operational elsewhere I do believe. Included is a photocopy of the Subscriber's Newsletter for this issue, dated Sept. 1980. This magazine is in unread, new-old-stock, pretty much as-published condition.
