Tiffen’s new Black Pearlescent® filters aid cinematographers in taking the edge off the image from modern digital lenses and cameras, especially with 4K acquisition sensors — specifically in mind to enhance the natural beauty of the shot. Black Pearlescent filters offer all of the benefits of the original Pearlescent filters, while adding a slightly reduced halo effect on spectacular highlights, and gently softening the overall image with a smooth glow. Today’s increased in-camera sharpness and contrast can sometimes show intense detail, and it’s here where the Black Pearlescent filter’s look comes into its own.
The 4 x 5.65" Black Pearlescent Filter from Tiffen is a 1/8-step diffusion filter that can be applied to soften contrast and reduce image sharpness, resulting in a more flattering subject rendering by reducing the appearance of blemishes and softening highlights. This is particularly suitable for digital cinematography, as high-resolution cameras may be unforgiving. Additionally, it creates a slightly reduced pearlescent halo around highlights, which can further enhance a subject's appearance or produce a desired effect; note that this effect is less pronounced than the halo effect of a white pearlescent filter.
Black pearlescent filters are available in diffusion grades of 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 1, 2, 3, and 4 steps, where each filter's effect becomes approximately twice as pronounced with each grade increase.

THE LIFE OF YOUR FILTERS
Filters, like all crafted optics, are susceptible not only to breakage, but to premature aging caused by environmental factors. Most filters are made up of several layers of materials consisting of glass, dyes, optical cements, chemical compounds, particles etc. Even with protective measures employed, there are many factors that can still affect the longevity of the filter: moisture (
prolonged
exposure to humidity), excessive heat and excessive light are the most common environmental causes that can affect the filter’s chemistry over time.
To protect your filters and keep them in great working condition for a long time (along with the rest of your camera gear) we recommend making sure to keep the filters stored in a dark, cool, and dry place when not in use. The use of filter pouches or specialized cases will also keep your filters safe from breakage when not in use. If you are in a humid environment, the addition of fresh silica gel packs or a dehumidifier in the room they are stored is also highly recommended. Protecting your filters as you would your camera lenses will ensure many years of use of your filters.
What do you recommend cleaning filters with?
Hand blower first, if it's just light dust, that usually handles it.
If you need to clean further, a Kim Wipe sprayed with Tiffen/Pancro Lens Cleaner, work in a circular motion from the middle out.
