Description
?This is what appears to be a Mills M1907 Mounted Cartridge Belt which was converted to "dismounted" (aka infantry) configuration by the removal of the pistol cartridge pockets and the sword attachment chape.  This is perhaps one of the most confusing areas to collectors of pre-WWI cartridge belts and the subject of numerous USMF postings, including "What is the Difference Between M1903 Cartridge Belts and M1907 Cartridge Belts", dated June 23, 2015, "M1903 Cartridge Belts", dated April 2, 2009 and M1909 vs. M1910 Mounted Belts", dated March 17, 2009.  I tend to think it is, indeed, a converted belt, but I'm certainly open to differing opinions and invite those expert collectors like my friend Robin Bartel to set me straight if my opinion is incorrect.
The belt is almost certainly manufactured by the Mills Woven Cartridge belt Co. by reason of the patent dates on the attachment clasp and the use of the narrower adjustment hooks fixture. It is also certainly post-1906 by reason of the use of the puckered or reinforced pockets made necessary by the adoption of the .30-'06 cartridge for the M1903 Springfield Rifle with its spitzer bullet.  However, I have been unable to spot the Mills name anywhere on the belt and it was probably effaced by wear over the years.  There are nine pockets, as would be correct for the mounted belts, secured by rimless Eagle Snaps, which are secured by the star-crimped glove style snaps which I guess were proprietary to Mills.  The belt is in very good condition for its age, but has wear to the woven edges of the adjustment ends on the underside and evidence of puncture holes from a removed unit property tag.  The woven material appears to be what is termed "olive drab" in the last USMF posting, which was used from 1907 until 1914 (see posting by "World War I Nerd" of posted March 20, 2009 for comparison and discussion of shades).
At rate, this is a very nice belt which would make a fine addition to the advanced collector of pre-WWI cartridge belts.   The buyer will have my usual unconditional guarantee of authenticity and a five-day right of inspection and return/refund privilege, excluding postage.
