This digest-sized book measures 15.3 by 22.8 cm and contains 152 pages, plus the wraps. Editor Robert C. Post discusses numerous minor matters on the Editor's Page. Not minor is the Guest Editorial that follows: NEW STEAM IN THE 1980's by William L. Withuhn as Bill discusses and illustrates the ACE 3000 over 5 pages. One could well surmise that if this project had been pursued, along with others, war with Iraq would have been unthinkable. THE OGDENSBURGH CONNECTION: A FAILED DREAM IN NORTHERN NEW YORK by Robert B. Shaw and Stephen G. Walsh devotes 35 pages to the fascinating story of the Northern Rail Road and why it never fulfilled its original promise long before the St. Lawrence Seaway was even dreamed of. I must confess I have a personal bias towards this road as it was built by the Shanly Brothers, who also excavated 85% of the Hoosac Tunnel, and who were good friends and primary clients, and probably occasional boarders, with my great grandparents. I digress, of course, but the book DAYLIGHT THROUGH THE MOUNTAIN is as much about the Northern as it is about the Hoosac. And the Northern became an important leg of the Rutland and we all know the extreme romance associated with that road! Enough, I shall move on to: THE LIGHTWEIGHT PASSENGER CAR WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO PULLMAN by William Van Der Sluys, which fills 23 pages with the detailed story of the development of the streamlined lightweight trains and cars and includes 14 photos, many of them of cars under construction, and numerous drawing. I'm showing the Illinois Central's Green Diamond below because it was so often overshadowed by roads with a larger advertising budget. THE GENERALS UP IN WALL STREET, RAY STANNARD BAKER AND THE RAILROADS by Eugene L. Huddleston takes us back nearly a century to the time that U.S. railroads were frequently regarded as the enemy and a threat to economic security at the very least. The business of government is to regulate, but..... I won't go there. CLOSING THE GAP: THE COAST LINE AND ITS BRIDGES IN VENTURA AND SANTA BARBARA COUNTIES by Nan Lawler is 19 pages devoted to what the author refers to as the most dramatic stretch of seaside railway in North America. This is, of course, the coast line north from Los Angeles and you'll get no argument from me. This is the story of the line and its bridges and viaducts, including 4 photos and 2 maps, and the Appendix lists the details of all such structures from Los Alamos to Piru. When you think about it, bridges are nearly as important to railroading as locomotives. I love to read about both. THE ILLINOIS TERMINAL: CORPORATE STRUCTURE AND STEAM POWER by William D. Edson. Most of us remember IT as an interurban... that was the fun part. But it did adapt to a changing world and the steam roster given here shows exactly how much freight it was able to move. This article fills 4 pages with text, 2 photos and the detailed roster. Notes and Queries, Book Reviews, Book Notes, Recent Articles and Dissertations, Memorial Notices and a Ten Year Index, 1971-1981 finish this diverse and fine edition. This long out-of-print book is in excellent, museum-quality condition.
