    Description

Your bid is for the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society RAILROAD HISTORY No. 224, with a publication cover date of SPRING-SUMMER 2021. This standard-magazine-sized book measures 21.0 by 26.7 cm and contains 128 pages, plus the wraps, with Dan Cupper as Editor. The front cover depicts what is arguably the most famous operating locomotive in the world. UP No.4014 is at Nelson, Ill., in 2019 in a photo by the editor. EDITOR’S SEATBOX is titled Milepost 100  “ … while we pause to reflect on the past, we also celebrate our links with the present and future.” SHORT TAKES is 4 illustrated pages of Random thoughts on the passing of the Official Guide by Kevin P. Keefe. In PRINT & IMAGE, deputy editor Kevin J. Holland tells us how the R&LHS logo was born and has continued since 1932. Celebrating 100 years, 1921-2021, A CENTURY OF R&LHS by J. Parker Lamb needs no further introduction. The main story is told over 20 pages and includes 27 illustrations. Included in the tale is John H. White, Jr.’s, story: On Being Number Two, as he took over as editor of the Bulletin from Charlie Fisher. Next comes RECALLING FOUNDER CHARLES FISHER by Frank Kyper; Remnants of Charlie Fisher’s Collection by Tom De Fazio; Finding help with builder’s plates by Alan Miller; and Supplying locomotive rosters and photos by Jack Swanberg. THE R&LHS CHAPTERS begins with the New York Chapter 1934- and ends 16 pages later with the Steel City Chapter 2017-. AMTRAK CALLING: A MEMOIR by Bruce Heard is fun reading for me since I have depended on Amtrak for my transportation needs and desires since before it was invented. If I have any complaint about this 12 page illustrated article, it is much too short! Heard worked in various high up Amtrak operating positions from 1972 until 2001. THE PARIS & MOUNT PLEASANT RAILROAD, The Brief Unhappy Life of a Texas Short Line, by Keith L. Bryant, fills out this struggling tale over 10 pages. A map, 15 photos, a locomotive & motorcar roster, and a timetable are included. Any questions? Check out the 34 notes. SIOUX FALLS AND THE ROCK ISLAND, A (Once) Might Fine Line, by Dennis C. Opferman and R. Milton Clark takes us to this South Dakota railroad hub over 12 pages. The first thing you notice is the wonderful illustrations: photographs, maps and a drawing. And the text will draw you right in. I loved it! RAILROAD TELEGRAPHY, A “Victorian Internet”, by Warren Jones gives us a review of this fascinating aspect of railroading over 8 pages. I hired out on the Boston & Maine as a spare telegrapher in 1964 as telegraphy was in its death throes. No one cared whether I could telegraph or not, so I spent my free time learning train dispatching. But I certainly loved the sounds coming out of the back room operator’s office as Maurice Paul received X-7 reports from Bob Casey. Either man could eat his lunch while sending, but you could not do that on a telephone. BOOK DIVISION begins with: Southern Pacific Los Angeles Division by John R. Signor and ends 24 books later with: The Trolley Car Era in Lincoln: Streetcars in Nebraska’s Capitol City, 1883-1945, by Richard R. Schmeling. MEMORIALS cover Denny S. Anspach, John W. Barriger IV, J. David Ingles, James A. Smith and Charles A. Stats. DISCUSSION is Virginian Notes. ENDMARKER is our R&LHS
certificate of incorporation in Massachusetts in 1925. This book is in new condition right out of the printer’s shipping carton.
Your satisfaction guaranteed. Please see my other eBay auctions for more rare and scarce railroad paper. I provide personal service without silly eBay games like waiting for payment before shipping, mandated payment methods, clumsy communications and charging for return shipping. Please check my feedback and DSR's. Everything I sell is POSTPAID USA, so the winning bid is what you pay, plus eBay’s state tax if applicable, unless you want special services. I normally ship first day after auction ends IF I have a payment plan & a proper shipping address, or you are a recent previous buyer. Thank you for reading.
