Your bid is for the October 1941 issue of RAILROAD MAGAZINE, which is Volume 30, Number 5, published by the Frank A. Munsey Company of 280 Broadway in New York City. This issue measures a digest-sized 16.7 by 24.0 cm and contains 144 pages, plus the wraps. The front cover painting by Harry Temple is called Watch Inspector and is one of my favorites. Some people collect these magazines just for Temple's works. THE BOOMER'S BAG OF TRICKS is 17 pages of memories of railroadin' on the Santa Fe road by Clifford Funkhouser. Read this BEFORE you hire out. "I had the best references on earth. I know because I manufactured them myself." Included is a photo of the author in his office, a caboose cupola. TRACKAGE RIGHTS by E.L. Thompson and James Holden is subtitled: Nearly Seven Percent of Our Rail Mileage Is Shared by Two or More Roads. And that probably is about right today, or even higher. All is explained over 16 pages, including 7 photos, a map and a drawing. RailFan Activities fills 8 pages and has 3 photos of the Grizzly Flats RR and Ward Kimball as a young man. FICTION this month is LANGUAGE OF THE KEY by Don Livingston on 11 pages and IMPERIAL VALLEY, being a Southern Pacific Novelet, by E.S. Dellinger over 22 pages, with illustrations included. I'm beginning to feel like those men as I spend so many hours at the keyboard and handling the dictionary. Actually, I use the dictionary to flatten out magazines for scanning. TRUE TALES OF THE RAILS begins with OPEN SWITCH  on 4 pages by Samuel J. Turk, who was then a Santa Fe fireman, on 01 July 1902 in Needles, California; SNAP JUDGMENT by Frederick W. Lass happened on the New York Central in May 1904 when the writer was working the Mount Murray signal tower and occupies 3 pages; and, finally, DINING-CAR CONDUCTOR by W.S. Dulmadge, who was given a gold ring at Skykomish by Mark Twain back in '93, after a slide cut the Great Northern main line and is fascinating reading on 4 illustrated pages. On the Spot features 17 pages of historic photos and begins with a Colorado & Southern Eng way down the bank and an essay on the cover subject of watch inspection. In a reader's poll of the August issue, Linwoody Moody's Sunset of the Narrow-Gage was the most popular, followed by TRUE TALES and then fiction. Railfan Activities and Summer Excursions came in last. Gosh, those readers had good taste! Our roster section this month is LOCOMOTIVES OF THE PENNSYLVANIA (PART 4) and this covers 5 pages, including 3 photos. Only 3 Standard 4-4-0's remain. Light of The Lantern devotes 4 pages and a photo to PRR Poppet-Valve Pacific No.5399. Model Railroading describes modeling a Defense Industry in O Gage. And much more. This magazine is in excellent condition as these old pulps go. The spine is professionally protected against deterioration and contamination with Scotch No.845 Book Tape.
