Soviet Medal Commemorating the 30
th
Anniversary of the 1957 Launch of the Sputnik,
the World’s First Man-Made Satellite of Earth.
GUARANTEED 100% ORIGINAL Soviet era medal, officially awarded in 1987 by the Cosmonautics Federation of the USSR. This was not a souvenir meant for sale to the general public!
Medallion is made of gilded brass (Tombac) and measures 29.0 mm wide. The obverse shows the Sputnik flying over the globe and the date of its launch, 4 October 1957. The reverse shows a satellite orbit and raised inscription “World’s First Artificial Satellite of Earth. Federation of Cosmonautics of the USSR”. The suspension is in gilded brass and unlike the similar, earlier medal commemorating the Sputnik flight, it has superimposed Roman numeral “XXX” for the 30
th
anniversary of the event. The reverse of the suspension has circular logo of the Moscow Mint which is correct for the 1980s period of manufacture (the earlier medal has a three letter “MMD” logo).
The medal is in EXCELLENT, NEAR MINT condition. The gilt finish is almost pristine and very bright, without any blemishes, visible dings or significant scratches. The details are perfect and crisp. The ribbon is immaculately clean, and the pin attachment is fully functional.
This interesting medal was awarded to someone directly involved with the Soviet space program, perhaps a rocket scientist, engineer, or manager. It can be a great addition to a collection of Soviet medals or Space Memorabilia.
