Description
Ultra rare original membership medal of the Military Society of the War of 1812. Full size medal on replacement ribbon. Engraved number “245” on the reverse just below the suspension ring. The medal itself measures approximately 1 5/16” across at the widest. There is a penny in one scan to show scale (not included in the sale). Not marked to maker, but note the level of detail down to the feathers on the reverse of the eagle (where they are visible behind the cross). I have looked through a jeweler’s loupe and see no cracks, chips or fractures in the enamel. Heavy tarnish overall (probably solid silver). The only problem that I could see is small bends in the a couple points of the cross. The ribbon is a hand made replacement, made of two pieces of separate ribbon seen together. It is a little too small for the brooch. You are buying the material pictured. The society was formed in 1826 and membership restricted to veterans of the war. In 1894 membership was opened to hereditary descendants of veterans. The medal was first struck by BB&B in silver gilt and numbered. There are present day strikes from an original medal. They all carry the same number (50). The Society is still active with 100 members. This organization should not be confused with the General Society of the War of 1812 which is also currently active. US shipping is .50 (1st class mail with tracking). No international shipping. Buyer pays sales tax as assessed and collected directly by eBay. This is a hobby not a living, so I try to keep it fun, otherwise why do it. Thank you for trading with me on eBay.
