    Description

This is a US Navy Formal (mess dress) uniform made in 1912 for Navy Ensign Carroll Beaver Byrne who was on the USS Colorado in 1913 as an Ensign and on the Submarine K-8 during 1915-17 as a Lt (jg).
The Lieutenant (jg) sleeve stripe was clearly added after this uniform was originally made.
The exterior is fine condition with the only significant issue being the replacement of the two rear waist buttons with WWII variants with the Eagle facing to his Right.
The front buttons and rear lower buttons are all of the proper earlier style with the Eagle facing to his left and they all show the back mark "J.R. Gaunt & Sons * New York".
The maker's label is "Rice & Duval, 258 & 260 Fifth Ave., New York" and shows this uniform was made 3/11/12 for Ensign C.B. Byrne, USN.
While the condition of the interior lining leaves much to be desired, the exterior is what shows and a
dditionally the original owner has an interesting service record during the period.
You are welcome to make a reasonable offer on this uniform.
