$ 7.91

Availability: 100 in stock

Description

This is a very
grainy
and slightly grayer,
fair quality,
rare hand printed silver halide gelatin photograph of the 'Kinau' at Beacon Point (not a digital inkjet print) custom printed in a darkroom from a copy negative from the original (may have been from a publication, its grainy), archivally developed in chemistry on
cropped, and mounted on a single 8x10 inch backing board **included as part of the print (see photo)
, shrink wrapped, with caption, Hawaii railroad history and photography information on the back. Note: we're not sure if this is the same engine as another photo we offer, it looks the same but may have been modified at a later date?? and the info with the original photo said it was of a Hutchinson Mill locomotive, on the Big Island probably circa 1890+?
Hutchinson Sugar Plantation Co. was located in the Ka'u district 65 miles southwest of Hilo. Situated in Naa'lehu at the foot of Mauna Loa, Hutchinson Plantation had the distinction of being the "farthest south" sugar mill on Hawaii, and was also the most isolated sugar company on the island, which often made it difficult to get and keep permanent workers.
It was one of the oldest sugar companies dating from the American Civil War period,  formed in 1868 by Alexander Hutchinson.
It would make a great birthday or holiday gift for someone who likes this area, historic railroad, or sugar industry images of Hawaii. They are popular reasonably priced decorations for restaurants, offices, homes, or stores where people can see them.
Our hand printed silver halide gelatin original and reproduction photos are very popular and affordable to local people and tourists visiting Hawaii, as well as people who have never visited Hawaii. In the near future real black and white silver halide photographic paper will cease to be available as manufacturers phase out production because of digital photography and we won't be printing these by hand in the darkroom forever.
The photos are the 'old style' traditional film based images printed using an enlarger from a negative on real photographic paper and archivally processed by hand, not by a machine. Prices are less than you would pay retail at a gallery or custom photo lab for a hand printed and mounted silver halide black and white print and production costs are lower than most folks so we want to offer affordable quality art for people who might not otherwise be able to afford it.

PLEASE ALSO NOTE
:
e-Bay's transfer process and the computer screen makes the photo look contrasty and slightly darker or lighter, depending on your monitor brightness and contrast settings. This photo is printed on non-glossy semi-matte 'pearl' surface paper and the photo offered has more gray tones, deep, richer blacks, less contrast, and has the unique look of a real silver halide gelatin print, which has a different tonal range and brightness than you may see on your individual computer screen. You may be able to see small imperfections on larger images as these are printed by hand 'as is' and are not retouched. We do however try to crop and correct them so they look best. It is printed on 8x10 inch paper from a negative and margins are trimmed to fit.
**When it is cropped and attached to the single mat 8x10" backing board you will be able to see the backing board around the borders of the print. It makes the print look like there is a margin around the edges of the photo, which you can see here.
Prints are permanently mounted to the acid free backing board using an archival photo adhesive and cannot easily be removed from the backing board without damaging the photo. An 11x14 inch frame (or larger) with a custom cut mat from a frame shop or art store is the suggested way to display this photo. If you want to use a larger frame and mat and you can't find an experienced framer who knows how to do it, contact us and we can provide information explaining how it can be done. This is recommended for best visual and artistic impact in displaying this photo, although many people are happy using a standard 8x10" frame and displaying the image as is.
